SIM registration: Authentic database will tackle scammers – Ashigbey

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications, Mr Ken Ashigbey has said that a credible data base as far as SIM card registration is concerned, will help in tackling scammers in the system.

Mr Ashigbey said this on the Sunrise show on 3FM, Monday August 29 while reacting to the release of the SIM Card registration Self-Service Application (App).

The App is intended for subscribers who have done Stage 1 of their SIM card registration to complete Stage 2, a statement issued by the National Communications Authority (NCA) said on Friday August 26.

The App called ‘GH SIM SELF REG’, is currently available for downloads on google play store, the statement added. It will be available on the Apple Store soon, the NCA said.

The decision to introduce the App was announced by Minister of Communications and Digitalization, Madam Ursula Owusu-Ekuful.

In announcing an extension of the deadline in re-registering SIM cards on Sunday, July 31 she said, “The SIM Registration App will be available for download on both android and IOS this week barring any unforeseen circumstances.

“Each registration via the app will be subject to a 5 cedi surcharge.”

Mr Ken Ashigbey told host Alfred Ocansey that “When the database is authentic we can now fish out those scammers and all.”

He added “The data is currently being kept at the National Information Technology Agency. The data security is not a major problem for us. If we could get the National Identification Authority (NIA) and NCA to work together that will be better.”
